After hearing so much about illnesses caused by insect bites like West Nile, my family decided to begin a search for the best mosquito repellent available on the market today. We chose a “divide and conquer” approach to our research. My teenage son and his friends used the Internet, I hit the library and my husband looked to medical professionals in our area.
There is good reason that we are so concerned about finding the best mosquito repellent. For some reason, people in our family tend to get eaten alive with bites during the summer months. The many illnesses associated with the bites are making us a little nervous.

However, we were also curious to see if the Internet is a really reliable resource or not. When it comes to finding the best mosquito repellent, it is.
DEET is the best insect repellent according to resources on the Internet, library and according to our physician. While we all came up with generally the same answer, it is important to note that every product that contains DEET is not necessarily the best mosquito repellent. Not all products that contain the ingredient are equal. Following are some guidelines that may prove to be helpful.
There should be at least 20 percent concentration of DEET in the product for it to be effective. However, you really don’t get any extra protection if it contains 50 percent or higher. The best mosquito repellent for children younger than twelve is a product that contains 10 percent DEET.
Basically, the higher the concentration, the less often you have to apply the product. Many may be tempted to buy products like insect repellent bracelets but they are not proven to be very effective even if they contain DEET. While the concept is really appealing especially for those of us who hate to reapply, the best mosquito repellent remains in sprays and lotions.
